ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation is at a premium in Birdsville during the winter months. Surprisingly no one seems to want to visit in summer and as such we are going to work closely with accommodation providers to do our best to have options available for participants who don’t wish to camp. You can check out a couple of the providers at The Birdsville Hotel and The Birdsville Caravan Park.

BIRDSVILLE HOTEL

The Birdsville Hotel offers well appointed ensuite motel style accommodation. The hotel is located in the main street and across the road from the airport. Meals and the all important beers are served daily. Regular shuttle buses will run from the Birdsville Hotel to the SDU Event Hub and a vehicle is not required to move around Birdsville.

BIRDSVILLE LODGE & CARAVAN PARK

The Birdsville Lodge provides ensuite accommodation. It also provides a kitchen for guest use and is located across the road from the airport. Guests are usually required to visit the Birdsville Caravan Park for check-in upon arrival.

The Birdsville Caravan Park is located on the banks of the Birdsville billabong and offers powered and unpowered camp sites, as well as cabin accommodation options. It is central to Birdsville and in walking distance of everything. There is a laundry on site for guest use. Bookings can be made by contacting the caravan park directly.

CAMPING

Camping is available at the above mentioned Birdsville Caravan Park, which has all the normal amenities, as well as powered and non-powered sites. Birdsville also has a free camping area between the Diamantina River and the town itself. You will likely see people camping in this area if you are coming by road from Adelaide or Windorah and there are some beautiful spots in amongst the trees along the riverbank.

CAMPING AT THE SDU EVENT HUB

Camping at the Hub is permitted in a designated area on Saturday night. Please note that there are no power, water or shower facilities available at the Hub. We would recommend that supporters move their camp back to Birdsville on Sunday morning while your participant is still out on course, so you can get back in time to cheer everyone home and then enjoy the post event festivities at the Birdsville Hotel on Sunday afternoon.

IF ALL OF THE ABOVE ARE FULLY BOOKED AND YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO FIND ACCOMMODATION FOR THE EVENT - CAMPING IS THE ONLY OPTION AVAILABLE.

SDU strongly recommends that potential participants follow Facebook and Instagram to stay up to date with the latest news prior. Creating an event in the remote Outback takes an extraordinary amount of planning and we will do everything we can to bring you the latest information as it comes to hand.

SDU strongly recommends that participants take out travel insurance.
